SOME NEWS FROM BARBUDA OUR SISTER ISLAND

There were very few reports from Barbuda but what we heard was good.

Bruno Fabiano of Palmetto Beach Hotel Barbuda <guffanti@comm2000.it> kindly provided info our sister island. They say that there was more wind than rain and that the island faired pretty well... "the island is still there with its beautiful people, beaches and hotels." People are already involved with generally light repairs in order to ensure the usual welcome for Guests. Phones are still down but the outlook is hopeful that they will be repaired shortly. Flights are on schedule since the day after Georges. "The only help we need is Guests booking in as usual. We will welcome them as usual to a nice relaxing stay in our lovable compound." ( Tue, 29 Sep 1998)

John Fuller (fullerj@candw.ag) had previously reported that Barbuda was fine with little or no damage. They were well prepared. He felt he had panicked them all as early as Friday. He reports that the microwave dish on antigua which is their phone link is down but should be up soon. (courtesy The Caribbean Hurricane Page)

John Marvin (marvins@candw.ag) confirmed that Barbuda was not hit as hard as Antigua. "There was some damage but most of the damage was done to the small wooden houses." Also (courtesy The Caribbean Hurricane Page)

Government reports on Barbuda indicate that the island was not adversely effected except for minor roof damage and the loss of nine telephone poles. There are 23 homeless there.
