FROM OUR ARCHIVES - SEPT. 98
ANTIGUA REVIVED
IN THE WAKE OF HURRICANE GEORGES

"I was immensely impressed by the huge efforts made by your fellow Antiguans following "Georges". Given that we arrived in Antigua the day after such a violent storm, we could hardly believe that after just one week, the whole of Jolly Harbour was operational again and most of the other hotels and resorts look as if they will be ready to re-open in a week or 2". - Craig Cowan Royal Engineers. (read the whole letter).

Do a few bent leaves spoil our sunset? I don't think so! I took this photo at Coconut Grove (Siboney) 3 weeks after hurricane Georges ran over Antigua (Sept. 98) when the rush of fresh growth had made an impact on our environment.

Today Antigua is back to normal.... and you will find few reminders of the devastation caused by Georges. These pages provide an archive that records the events immediately following the hurricane. In the event of another hurricane it will help you assess the speed of our next recovery. It is a testiment to the spirit the inhabitants that despite 5 hurricanes (so far) in the 90's, Antigua remains as picturesque today as it was a decade ago... a haven of peace and simplicity in an otherwise hectic world, where sun, sea and sand join palms and pina coladas as part of our everyday life.

The original AntiguaNews page went online on Tue, 29 Sept 1998, just two days after I got my telephone lines back and discovered how misleading reports of devastation in Antigua were.

Most visitors to the site were tourists and tour guides who really wanted to visit the Caribbean, but were confused by the conflicting reports. They didn't want to hear how we suffered through the storm (save that for the bar later), they wanted to know if their holiday would be wrecked. To that end, most of the info you will find here include reports from individuals and businesses on about how the storm affected them and what visitors to the island can honestly expect to find.
